Le Maagjesbolwerk a été achevé en mai 2003 et a été conçu par l'architecte Hans Ruijssenaars, qui s'est inspiré du passé fortifié de Zwolle. La couche inférieure du Maagjesbolwerk mesure dix mètres de haut, ce qui correspond au bastion original qui se trouvait au même endroit. La forme en pointe du bastion se retrouve également dans le design.
