En 1850, par décret royal, le roi Willem III a accordé la permission de creuser ce canal. En 1851, les travaux de ce grand chantier ont commencé. 532 ouvriers ont travaillé sur ce projet immense. Ils gagnaient 15 centimes par mètre cube de terre excavée. La terre était utilisée pour la digue du canal. Le 12 juin 1855, la section Hancate-Almelo a été ouverte et le 7 septembre la section Dalmsholte-Deventer.
Jusqu'à environ 1956, des navires naviguaient dans le canal transportant des betteraves, de la tourbe, du sable et des engrais. Aujourd'hui, le canal est utilisé pour l'approvisionnement et l'évacuation de l'eau.
