La Nieuwestad est un quartier et une rue commerçante avec un canal dans le centre-ville de Leeuwarden, dans la province néerlandaise de Frise. Le nom Nieuwestad a été mentionné pour la première fois en 1456 comme un quartier ou un canal ajouté. Entre les deux côtés de la Nieuwestad se trouve un pont piétonnier au niveau du Herenwaltje ; et plusieurs canaux, d'ouest en est : Adje Lammerts- ou Westerpijp, Duca Martenapijp, Nieuwepijp, Lange pijp, et Tontjepijp. En 1601, une partie entre la Lange pijp et la Martenapijp fut destinée au marché de la viande. Le côté nord ou étroit n'était généralement pas désigné comme Nieuwestad jusqu'en 1877, mais portait le nom des canaux. Le côté sud est traditionnellement appelé Nieuwestad. De 1827 à 1891, un Winkel van Sinkel était établi à la Nieuwestad.
