Montaña Grande è un cono vulcanico formatosi meno di 10.000 anni fa. Il cono arriva fino a 276 metri sul livello del mare.
Il cratere di Montaña Grande ha un diametro di circa 300 metri ed una profondità di circa 50 metri. Presenta una certa asimmetria dovuta all'azione del vento durante il periodo di formazione. In alcune zone del malpaïs si trovano diversi jameos (tubi vulcanici dal quale parte della copertura cade a causa della gravità). Degna di nota è la Cueva Honda , formata da una grande bolla di gas in un tubo di lava.
La costa si è erosa dopo le ultime eruzioni e in alcuni punti si sono formate spiagge.
Il grande campo lavico mostra l' aspetto caratteristico dei malpaís (aa) , sebbene supporti anche aree con superficie più liscia (pahoehoe) .
