Il Monte Carmelo in Terra Santa è menzionato nella Bibbia come il luogo dove Elia combatté contro i profeti dell'idolo Baal.
Nel XII secolo gli eremiti si ispirarono alla fede del profeta Elia e si stabilirono sul Monte Carmelo, sotto la protezione della Beata Vergine. Gettarono le basi per i successivi ordini dei Carmelitani e dei Carmelitani.
