Il viaggiatore polare Adrien de Gerlache progettò questa goletta che fu costruita in Scozia. Il Mercator ebbe solo due comandanti e effettuò 54 viaggi. Nel 1936 il Mercator riportò a casa le spoglie di Padre Damiano. Nel 1960 il Mercator entrò nel porto di Anversa. Nel 1961 fu allestito come nave museo. Dal 1964 il Mercator è un gioiello nella corona di Ostenda. Dopo ampi lavori di ristrutturazione durati un anno e mezzo, la nave è dal 1° aprile 2017 di proprietà della città di Ostenda e ora fa parte del patrimonio marittimo della città.
