La costruzione della basilica iniziò nel 1857, in seguito al dogma dell'Immacolata Concezione nel 1854. Monsignore Malou, vescovo di Bruges, desiderava una chiesa monumentale per tutta la sua diocesi, per onorare questo dogma. I piani erano dell'architetto inglese Edward Welby Pugin. La chiesa di Dadizele fu elevata a basilica nel 1882 da Papa Leone XIII. Oltre alla Cappella del Sangue Santo a Bruges, è l'unica basilica della diocesi.
Le meravigliose vetrate raccontano, oltre alla storia della chiesa, anche vari fatti della vita di Maria.
Nella cripta vediamo la tomba, le impronte, i guanti e la spada del Cavaliere Jan van Dadizele. La basilica è un monumento protetto.
