Dal 1923 al 1992 si è estratto carbone nella miniera di Zolder. Fu qui che il 30 settembre 1992 l'ultima miniera di carbone del Benelux chiuse definitivamente le porte. L'arrivo di molti lavoratori stranieri nella miniera ha conferito al comune in breve tempo una popolazione multiculturale.
Dal punto di vista turistico, il circuito automobilistico di Zolder è il principale biglietto da visita del comune.
Nel comune è possibile visitare alcuni castelli come: il castello Vogelsanck e il castello Meylandt.
Inoltre, la zona del lago Centrale del Limburgo si trova in parte nel comune.
