La regione a est di Ypres è stata per quattro anni, dal 1914 al 1918, il teatro di guerra nella Grande Guerra o Prima Guerra Mondiale. Il fronte, il Saliente di Ypres, è stato principalmente difeso dalle truppe britanniche. Per tutto quel tempo gli alleati hanno resistito, ma Ypres e i villaggi circostanti sono stati praticamente rasi al suolo. Bilancio totale: 300.000 morti tra le file alleate, di cui almeno 250.000 britannici. I numerosi cimiteri testimoniano il passato sanguinoso della regione.
Il centro di Ypres è stato completamente distrutto durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale. Tutti gli edifici sono stati successivamente ricostruiti con cura. L'imponente Sala del Mercato in Grote Markt risale originariamente al 1304. Ospita ora il toccante Museo In Flanders Fields, che racconta la grande storia della guerra. E al Menenpoort, dove sono incisi i nomi di 54.896 soldati britannici, ogni sera alle 20:00 viene suonata la Last Post in omaggio alle loro gesta eroiche.
