Sulla Coudenberg sorgeva un tempo il Palazzo Coudenberg, uno degli edifici più prestigiosi d'Europa. Qui si riuniva l'Ordine del Vello d'Oro. Filippo il Buono avviò la costruzione di un imponente palazzo nel XV secolo. Da qui avrebbe gestito l'intero impero dei Paesi Bassi. Albrecht Dürer dichiarò di non aver mai visto una tale magnificenza e ricchezza. Distrutto da un incendio nel febbraio 1731, le rovine del palazzo furono demolite più di 40 anni dopo. È ora il sito archeologico più importante di Bruxelles. Nel luogo dove un tempo sorgeva la cappella, ora si trova il "BELvue museum", un museo sulla storia del Belgio.
