Il 13 maggio 1847 l'architetto comunale François Drossaert redasse un dossier di progettazione per la costruzione di un nuovo carcere dietro la stazione di polizia in Grote Markt. Il 1° ottobre 1848 l'edificio entrò in servizio. Fino al 1862, qui si scontarono effettivamente le pene della polizia. Dopo il restauro nel 1978, fu allestito come museo.
Dopo 20 anni, il museo è stato ristrutturato e ampliato significativamente. Non solo lo spazio espositivo è stato raddoppiato, ma è stata anche prevista sufficiente spazio per conservare i reperti museali in condizioni ottimali.
