L'origine del priorato agostiniano di Groenedaal risale al 1343. Da una cella, già menzionata nel 1304, si sviluppò in un vero e proprio priorato. Jan van Ruusbroec è stato uno degli abitanti del XIV secolo. Nel 1783 il priorato viene soppresso da Giuseppe II, e sotto l'occupazione francese viene dichiarato confiscato. La maggior parte degli edifici fu demolita nel 1825. La fattoria del priorato, la sottostruttura della chiesa del priorato (ora un fienile) e la ex casa del priore (l'odierno castello di Groenendaal) furono risparmiate dalla demolizione.
