Il municipio di Charleroi è stato inaugurato nel 1936.
È un'opera monumentale in stile classico con tocchi art déco che si celano nelle linee geometriche e nel gioco dei materiali: marmo rosso e nero, bronzo, ottone e ferro battuto.
L'interno è decorato con numerose statue che devono celebrare la vittoria della città, la sua prosperità e la ricchezza industriale. Solo la sala del consiglio comunale contiene un dipinto composto da sette pannelli che corrispondono a sette finestre con gli stemmi dei cantoni dell'arrondissement di Charleroi.
Il campanile di quest'opera dell'architettura civile figura nella lista del patrimonio mondiale dell'UNESCO.
