La Battaglia di Buggenhout si svolse all'inizio della Prima Guerra Mondiale in Belgio a Buggenhout, un comune tra Anversa, Gand e Bruxelles. L'esercito belga uscì da Anversa contro le truppe tedesche a sud. I belgi pianificarono di sfruttare i movimenti delle truppe tedesche lontano da Anversa e di assistere l'esercito francese sulla Marna. Il re Alberto I, comandante supremo belga, notò che i tedeschi avevano rinforzato la maggior parte delle loro posizioni a sud di Anversa e ridusse l'attacco a un'operazione contro la Brigata Landwehr 37, che si era avanzata da Bruxelles verso Dendermonde.
L'attacco fu effettuato dalla 4ª e 5ª divisione dell'esercito di campo. La 4ª Divisione avanzò da Grembergen e Hamme, mentre i 2° e 5° reggimenti Chasseurs à pied della 5ª Divisione attaccarono il fianco sinistro da Bornem e Puurs. La Divisione di Cavalleria attaccò Aalst da ovest, ma l'uscita belga fu sospesa dopo che l'artiglieria tedesca iniziò un bombardamento dei forti del ridotto nazionale del Belgio intorno ad Anversa, in preparazione al proprio attacco.
