La fortezza faceva parte della cintura esterna della cintura di Anversa. Durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale, circa 330 uomini erano impiegati nella fortezza. La fortezza non ha mai svolto un ruolo attivo di difesa. Negli anni '70 del secolo scorso, i genieri dell'esercito belga tentarono di far saltare in aria la fortezza. Si rivelò un compito un po' troppo grande, una parte giace ora in uno stato desolato. La fortezza è ancora un dominio militare e non è accessibile. Da poco è completamente abbandonata e vi trovano rifugio i pipistrelli.
