Qui si incrociano numerose linee di trasporto pubblico, è la porta d'accesso al quartiere della moda di Anversa, al centro storico e al quartiere dello shopping.
La Groenplaats era un cimitero sin dal Medioevo associato alla Cattedrale di Nostra Signora. Solo alla fine del XVIII secolo questo cimitero fu trasformato in una piazza. Questo avvenne dopo che l'imperatore Giuseppe II proibì l'uso dei cimiteri all'interno delle mura cittadine.
Attualmente, la Groenplaats è una grande area rettangolare con poco traffico. Sul lato nord ha la sua fermata il trenino turistico. Al centro della Groenplaats si erge la statua di Peter Paul Rubens. L'area intorno alla statua è, nelle giornate di sole, un luogo popolare di ritrovo per gli studenti e gli scolari di Anversa.
