Il castello di Zellaer fu costruito nel 1885 su commissione del barone de Vrière. La fortezza acquatica neogotica è stata progettata dall'architetto di Mechelen Heugenbaarts ed è una copia di un castello della Loira del 15° secolo. Le pietre provenivano dalle fortezze di Vilvoorde.
Originariamente c'era già un castello acquatico feudale risalente alla metà del 13° secolo, fondato da Wouter Berthout. All'inizio di quel 13° secolo si parlava già di Arnold van Zellaer come primo abitante.
Nel 1962 l'ordine laicale Foyer de Charité vi si stabilì e fino al 2016 il castello fu utilizzato come centro di riflessione diocesano.
Dal 2001 sia il castello che la rimessa per le carrozze sono protetti come monumento.
Nel 2017 il comune di Bonheiden divenne proprietario per il venti percento del dominio e l'intero dominio viene affittato all'associazione senza scopo di lucro 'Kempens Landschap'.
L'ambizione è di rendere il dominio accessibile a tutti nel 2018.
