Chi ha fortuna e viene a passeggiare durante gli orari di apertura del Servizio per il Turismo nel vecchio municipio di Zottegem, può ricevere la chiave della cripta. Nella cripta sotto la chiesa di Nostra Signora dell'Assunzione, accessibile tramite una cupola, si trovano i scheletri di Lamoraal conte di Egmont e di sua moglie Sabina di Baviera. “Alte figure storiche trovano riposo eterno in un sarcofago”, dice De Looze. “Qui la coppia giace aperta e in mostra. Unico.” Egmont fu decapitato il 5 giugno 1568 nella Grande Piazza di Bruxelles.
Nella Sala del Consiglio del municipio è appeso anche il dipinto del XIX secolo Les têtes coupées. “Alla gilda degli arcieri, di cui era imperatore, Egmont aveva chiesto di portare il suo corpo a Zottegem dopo la sua morte”, racconta De Looze. “E così avvenne.”
