Diverse scoperte archeologiche in quest'area, tra cui pozzi romani, resti di abitazioni romane e oggetti gallo-romani, hanno dimostrato che in quest'area si estraeva argilla da secoli. Nel 1889, la famiglia d’Hemptine decise di fondare su queste fondamenta una "steengelaag" (Briquetteries de Stekene et de Thielrode). Al suo apice, venivano prodotti oltre 40 milioni di mattoni all'anno. Negli anni '60, la fabbrica di mattoni divenne così obsoleta che non riusciva più a tenere il passo con la concorrenza e quindi dovette chiudere. La cava di argilla più profonda fu riempita durante la costruzione della E17 con le eccedenze di acqua spruzzata. Nacque così il Waesmeer, uno stagno di 18 ha di superficie. Dopo essere stata per un certo periodo sfruttata come area ricreativa, la natura può tornare a seguire il suo corso. Il lago è un importante luogo di svernamento per le anatre. A volte si trovano più di 2000 esemplari di Aythya ferina!
