Poco dopo la seconda guerra mondiale (1947) appaiono le prime panchine in legno massello lungo il Zeedijk di Middelkerke. Inizialmente verniciate di verde e bianco, in seguito dipinte nei colori di Middelkerke: blu e bianco. Queste prime panchine in legno massello erano un design originale del residente di Middelkerke Rudolf Lombaert e furono costruite dal falegname locale Maurice Minu con 'legno congolese'. Con il passare del tempo sono rimaste indissolubilmente legate all'immagine turistica di Middelkerke.
