In questo luogo si trovava per secoli un edificio ecclesiastico che divenne un luogo di pellegrinaggio attorno alla statua miracolosa di Maria, approdata nel 1596. Era una delle più antiche chiese di pellegrinaggio della regione.
Subito prima della Prima Guerra Mondiale si stava già pensando di sostituire la chiesa fatiscente. Durante la guerra, la chiesa venne completamente distrutta.
Nel 1919 fu inizialmente posata una chiesa provvisoria, poi il duo di architetti di Ostenda Charles Pil e Henri Carbon progettò un nuovo edificio ecclesiastico in stile neoromanico che fu completato nel 1923.
La chiesetta con la statua di Maria è ancora oggi un luogo di pellegrinaggio per i pescatori del posto. Nelle vetrate sono raffigurati molti miracoli attribuiti alla statua miracolosa.
