Rogier Van der Weyden è uno dei Primitivi Fiamminghi del XV secolo, contemporaneo dei fratelli Van Eyck. Nacque a Tournai come Roger de la Pasture. Lavorò per molti anni nello studio del suo maestro Robert Campin. La sua opera principale è "La Deposizione". Nel 1435 Van der Weyden diventa pittore di corte a Bruxelles. Lavorò per molti anni ai pannelli della giustizia per il nuovo municipio, ma purtroppo andarono perduti durante il bombardamento francese del 1695.
