La Heide di Mechelen fa parte della Riserva Naturale Fiamminga Hoge Kempen. Si trova sul bordo orientale dell'Altopiano Kempense ed è stata la prima riserva naturale del Limburgo. Con una superficie totale di 900 ettari, è anche una delle più grandi aree di heide in Fiandre. La gestione è affidata all'Agenzia per la Natura e il Bosco. Il paesaggio collinare, con terreni sabbiosi argillosi e luoghi ricchi di torba, crea in estate un meraviglioso tappeto viola di heide in fioritura. Dalle cime delle colline si ha una vista splendida sulla heide e sulla zona del Mosa.
