Il comune è stato istituito il 15 ottobre 2001 con la fusione dei comuni soppressi di Cagiallo, Lopagno, Roveredo, Sala Capriasca, Tesserete e Vaglio; la sede comunale è nella frazione di Tesserete.
Il 18 ottobre 2001, in seguito alla creazione del comune di Capriasca, la comunanza Sala Capriasca-Vaglio-Lugaggia è stata denominata comunanza Capriasca-Lugaggia. Il 20 aprile 2008 sono stati aggregati a Capriasca i comuni soppressi di Bidogno, Corticiasca e Lugaggia.
