Il lago Lemàno , spesso chiamato lago di Ginevra, è il maggiore lago della Svizzera e dell'Europa occidentale, posto sul confine franco-svizzero ed esteso per il 40% in Francia e per il restante 60% in Svizzera.
Diviso per un'irregolarità nella forma presso Yvoire in Grand lac a est e Petit lac a ovest, è formato dalle acque del Rodano, il suo maggiore immissario ed emissario, ebbe origine al termine dell'ultima glaciazione, circa 15.000 anni fa, e presenta una forma allungata, tipica di un lago glaciale subalpino, a mezza luna in direzione est-ovest con la concavità verso la sponda meridionale, quella francese.
