L'aeroporto di Buttwil è stato costruito come sostituto dell'aeroporto di Spreitenbach, che ha dovuto cedere il passo alla stazione merci e all'aeroporto di Zurigo in continua espansione. Inizialmente, il gestore era la Comunità di interesse dell'area aeroportuale di Buttwil.
Esso è principalmente utilizzato dalla scuola di volo Eichenberger AG e dalla Central Helicopter Service AG per la formazione al volo su aerei leggeri e elicotteri. Inoltre, da lì vengono effettuati voli di lavoro e di carico per la fornitura di montagna e rifugi nella regione.
