È di importanza turistica, oltre al grande valore ricreativo dei due laghi artificiali Ruhr Hengsteysee e Harkortsee, così come delle boscose Altezze di Ardey, anche il quartiere Bach come città storica con molte case a graticcio e il viadotto sulla Ruhr, alto circa 30 metri.
Herdecke si trova direttamente sul fiume Ruhr con i suoi due laghi artificiali Hengsteysee e Harkortsee, la Valle della Ruhr e la Porta di Ardey. Da un punto di vista paesaggistico, Herdecke appartiene ai contrafforti nordoccidentali del Sauerland ed è considerata parte della regione collinare del Niederbergisch-Märkisch. Herdecke si trova a un altitudine di 80 fino a 274 m s.l.m.
