La città si trova nelle montagne granitiche della Sassonia Centrale, direttamente sulla Mulde di Zwickau e dista circa 25 km da Mittweida, circa 25 km da Chemnitz e circa 65 km da Lipsia.
Il nome sorabo del luogo è Luncznaw, ed è il villaggio sorabo più a sud della piccola regione soraba di Rochelinzi. Nel 1170 i coloni tedeschi fondarono un villaggio lineare accanto all'esistente villaggio sorabo. Cinque anni dopo Lunzenau fu menzionata come possedimento del cavaliere Guntheros de Rohsberg. Nel 1209 Hohenkirchen fu citata come parrocchia responsabile per Lunzenau. Lunzenau ottenne il diritto di città nel 1333. Sei anni prima avvenne la prima menzione del ponte sulla Mulde di Lunzenau.
