Bad Essen è un comune situato a est del distretto di Osnabrück nella Bassa Sassonia. Bad Essen si trova con il suo centro storico lungo la Strada Tedesca delle Case a Graticcio e nel Parco Naturale e Geoparco TERRA.vita.
Il comune di Bad Essen si trova al confine tra le montagne della Germania Centrale e la pianura nord-tedesca. La catena montuosa Wiehen copre circa un terzo meridionale del comune e raggiunge la sua massima altezza di 211 m sul livello del mare al Schwarzen Brink nella frazione di Lintorf. Tuttavia, la cima più alta di Bad Essen si trova a 215 m sul livello del mare su un terreno agricolo a nord di Büscherheide. La parte centrale del comune è pianeggiante, a una media di 50 m sul livello del mare e appartiene all'area naturale del Lübbecker Lößland. Il nord del territorio comunale appartiene già alla Geest di Rahden-Diepenau. Il fiume Hunte attraversa Bad Essen da sud a nord, incrociando il Canale Centrale nella frazione di Wittlage, che attraversa il territorio comunale in direzione est-ovest.
