L'Osten è il comune più orientale nel distretto di Cuxhaven in Bassa Sassonia. Il comune fa parte del comune associato di Hemmoor.
Nella zona di estuario dell'Elba e dell'Oste abitava già prima della nascita di Cristo una tribù germanica, i Chauken. Gli insediamenti pianeggianti sulle wurtens esistevano fino al XII secolo. All'epoca iniziò la coltivazione pianificata delle paludi e delle torbiere; furono costruite le dighe con le chiuse per il drenaggio e l'irrigazione della terra, i fleets, le wettern e i fossati.
