È il capoluogo, e il centro maggiore, del circondario di Minden-Lübbecke . Si fregia del titolo di "grande città di circondario" . Degno di nota il duomo di Minden, in passato sede della soppressa diocesi di Minden.
La città venne fondata nell'anno 798 da Carlo Magno con il nome di "Minda". Nell'ambito del Sacro Romano Impero fu un vescovato appartenente alla provincia del Basso Reno-Vestfalia.
