La centrale elettrica Gustav Knepper era una centrale a carbone nel quartiere Mengede di Dortmund, al confine della città con Castrop-Rauxel. Prende il nome dal direttore minerario Gustav Knepper. I vecchi blocchi A/B si trovavano nel territorio di Dortmund, il blocco C su suolo di Castrop-Rauxel.
La centrale a carbone è stata costruita dal 1951 al 1971 secondo i progetti dell'architetto industriale di Essen Fritz Schupp nell'area dell'impianto di estrazione Gustav della miniera Adolf von Hansemann in cinque fasi di espansione. Inizialmente, l'operatore della centrale era la Gelsenkirchener Bergwerks-AG, seguita dalla Bochumer Bergbau AG e dalla VEBA Kraftwerke Ruhr AG. Dalla fusione di VEBA e Viag è nata l'E.ON AG, che successivamente ha trasferito nuovamente le sue centrali convenzionali nel gruppo Uniper. Infine, la centrale apparteneva al gruppo imprenditoriale Hagedorn. Tuttavia, l'acquisto della centrale è avvenuto solo dopo la chiusura.
