La chiesa parrocchiale di San Giacomo nel centro storico si erge sulle fondamenta di una chiesa predecessore più piccola. Era già visibile sul primo sigillo cittadino del 1248. Alcune delle sue fondamenta sono conservate fino ad oggi.
Dopo il grande incendio della città del 1478, la chiesa fu ricostruita. La prima notizia su questa chiesa risale al 1495, quando avvenne la consacrazione. A quel tempo, probabilmente, erano completati la parte più antica, la sacrestia, e il coro a volta. Il coro ha due campate con volte a crociera e termina con un'abside poligonale con chiusura a 5/8.
