Il Plane è un affluente sinistro lungo circa 61 km dell'Havel in Brandeburgo. Il suo bacino idrografico ha una superficie di 639 km². È il più grande dei quattro importanti corsi d'acqua naturali sul lato nord dell'Hohen Fläming, ai quali oltre al Plane appartengono il suo affluente Temnitz, il Buckau e il Verlorenwasser.
Secondo Sophie Wauer, il nome Plane deriva dall'antico polabiano plony e si riferisce a un fiume che scorre nella pianura. Plony si riferisce a un terreno pianeggiante, liscio e incoltivabile. Gli slavi autoctoni erano abitanti del distretto di Ploni. Il villaggio di Planow, situato a ovest del corso d'acqua tra Reckahn e Göttin, è stato così chiamato e menzionato per la prima volta in un documento di donazione del margravio Otto il Lungo nel 1297 e già nel libro della terra di Carlo IV del 1375 è descritto come deserto.
