La miniera Pluto era una miniera di carbone a Herne nel quartiere Wanne-Eickel. Inizialmente, la miniera era conosciuta con il nome di miniera San Nicola e in seguito fu rinominata miniera Pluto. Il nome della miniera è ispirato al dio greco Pluto, dio dell'oltretomba. La miniera Pluto era tra i membri fondatori del Sindacato minerario della Renania-Westfalia. Inoltre, la Società mineraria per azioni Pluto era tra i membri fondatori dell'associazione per gli interessi minerari. Nella seconda metà del XIX secolo, la miniera era una delle più importanti della circoscrizione di Arnsberg.
