Il Eibsee si trova al bordo orientale della città di Chemnitz, a sud-ovest di Euba. Il lago è stato creato da una cava, da cui sono stati estratti pietre per la costruzione della diga di Euba dal 1912 al 1914. A partire dal 1926, il lago è stato utilizzato come parco naturale, per il sole, l'aria e il nuoto. Parallelamente, dal 1930 il terreno è diventato un campo di esercitazione della Wehrmacht tedesca e dal 1935 della Wehrmacht. Dal 1945 al 1992, l'esercito sovietico ha utilizzato questa infrastruttura per scopi militari.
Nel 1996 è iniziata la bonifica dell'Eibsee e sono state adottate misure per la rimozione delle vecchie discariche. Sono stati recuperati, tra l'altro, 126 tonnellate di pneumatici usati, 80 carcasse di auto, 50 frigoriferi e 760 kg di munizioni.
