Mogontiacum era il nome della fortezza legionaria e della città che vi sorse attorno, divenendo la capitale della provincia romana della Germania superiore; corrisponde all'odierna città tedesca di Magonza.
La fortezza, che aveva la funzione di controllare le tribù germaniche dei Catti, dei Mattiaci e dei Vangioni, fu fondata probabilmente nel 13-11 a.C. come accampamento per l'esercito romano di Druso maggiore impegnato nella campagna di conquista della Germania. Ospitò fino a due legioni , fungendo anche da base per la Classis Germanica. La posizione strategica dell'accampamento, costruito su di un'altura, permetteva il controllo della confluenza del Reno e del Meno.
