Il villaggio si trova a circa cinque chilometri a sud di Betzenstein e si trova a un'altitudine di 529 m s.l.m.
Il nome originario di Riegelstein era Raupersdorf. Hans I. il Türrigel inizializzò la costruzione del castello di Riegelstein. I suoi figli si chiamarono per la prima volta nel 1403 "Tyrrigel zum Riegelstein", anche Türriegel o Dürriegel. Così il villaggio assunse il nome: "Riegelstein". I Türriegel erano ministeriali dei conti di Reicheneck e si svincolarono dai conti con un ampio possedimento intorno a Riegelstein. Dal 1403 erano allodiali. Intorno all'anno 1500 Heinrich VI. era non solo cavaliere di torneo a Ingolstadt, Bamberga e Würzburg, ma anche custode a tempo pieno nei castelli di Stierberg e Betzenstein.
