Il villaggio si trova a quattro chilometri a sud di Betzenstein e si trova a un'altezza di 562 m s.l.m.
A causa delle riforme amministrative attuate all'inizio del 19° secolo nel Regno di Baviera, fu fondata la comune rurale indipendente di Spies, alla quale appartenevano anche il villaggio di Riegelstein come sede del comune, i villaggi di Eichenstruth e Illafeld e l'isolato di Eibenthal. Il comune di Schermshöhe, che in seguito fu assegnato alla comune di Spies, non esisteva ancora a quel tempo. Il nucleo per la nascita di Schermshöhe è un'osteria, costruita nel 1870 su una cima montuosa all'epoca ancora disabitata. Il costruttore di questa casa fu Konrad Scherm, un ex guardaboschi, che eresse il ristorante su un terreno che gli era stato assegnato per la sua pensione.
