L'insediamento disperso si trova su un promontorio di geesto a circa quattro chilometri a ovest di Esens. Utgast comprende anche i luoghi abitati di Küsterei, Mimstede, Mosishütte, Pansath e Plaggenkroog, che insieme coprono un'area di 760 ettari. In totale, a Utgast vivono circa 350 abitanti.
Utgast è probabilmente abitato sin dall'età del ferro. Durante il Medioevo, nel territorio dell'attuale circoscrizione sorgeva il monastero di Pansath, che dal 1421 costituiva una fattoria del monastero vicino di Marienkamp.
