Fin dal 11° e 12° secolo, l'oro di Bentheim viene estratto in diverse cave di pietra. Nel periodo di massimo splendore c'erano più di 20 cave, oggi ce ne sono ancora due in uso che puoi visitare. Nella Gildehaus e presso il teatro all'aperto di Bad Bentheim, si estrae ancora la arenaria color beige.
