Il comune si trova a destra del fiume Fluvià. C'è un settore pianeggiante lungo il fiume e il resto è chiuso dalle montagne che segnano la fine della pianura fluviale dell'Alt Empordà. Nel 2005 aveva 115 abitanti registrati. È raggruppato attorno alla chiesa parrocchiale e conserva resti dell'area muraria medievale. Forma un piccolo complesso monumentale, al di fuori del quale ci sono diverse case coloniche. L'economia principale è l'agricoltura, l'allevamento e l'industria del legno. Vilaür è un toponimo ritenuto formato dalla parola catalana vila e da un nome personale germanico. Il paese celebra la festa a luglio, nel giorno di San Giacomo.
