Ávila è la capitale di una provincia omonima nella regione di Castiglia e León. Con i suoi 1130 metri è la capitale provinciale più alta della Spagna. Ciò dovrebbe garantire temperature relativamente miti in estate.
La città è soprattutto nota per la sua completa muraglia medievale. I lavori sulla muraglia iniziarono nel 1090. Il muro è lungo 2,5 km e conta 88 torri. Il muro stesso è spesso 3 metri e ha un'altezza media di 12 metri. La città muraria conta anche 9 porte cittadine.
Ávila è anche la città con uno dei maggiori numeri di chiese in proporzione alla sua popolazione. La cattedrale risale dal XII al XV secolo. A causa dei lunghi tempi di costruzione, presenta diverse forme di stile gotico.
Il centro storico di Ávila è stato dichiarato Patrimonio dell'Umanità nel 1985.
Nel 1515 nacque qui Santa Teresa de Jesús. Era una religiosa, mistica e scrittrice spagnola che fondò l'Ordine delle Carmelitane Scalze. È considerata una delle sante spagnole più importanti.
