La Plaza Mayor di Villena è situata accanto a Calle Mayor e segue la tradizione delle piazze maggiori spagnole. Urbanisticamente, è l'asse principale delle comunicazioni tra il centro storico e la città moderna.
La prima menzione di questa piazza risale al XIV secolo, anche se la sua formazione implica un processo che si sviluppa nel tempo, fino a raggiungere la sua forma attuale. Originariamente era uno spazio aperto che serviva come luogo di incontro per il Consiglio Comunale, fino a quando nel 1560 si decise di edificare nell'angolo nord della piazza l'Almudì, o luogo destinato alla raccolta di grano del granaio, trasferendo simultaneamente le sessioni municipali nelle cosiddette Case del Tesoro, in Plaza de Santiago.
