Metzeral, il più antico villaggio della Grande Vallée, con 1.109 abitanti, ha una ricca storia. Fu menzionato per la prima volta nell'817 e il suo nome deriva probabilmente dalla parola latina per "piccolo muro a secco". Il villaggio ottenne l'indipendenza nel 1801 e prosperò nel XIX secolo grazie all'industria tessile. Vittima della Prima Guerra Mondiale, Metzeral è oggi un centro turistico, in particolare con l'impianto di imbottigliamento dell'acqua di sorgente "Valon". La Chiesa dell'Emm, costruita in omaggio ai caduti della guerra 1914-18, è un luogo di pellegrinaggio. Il cimitero militare di Chêne Millet ricorda le devastazioni della guerra. La regione offre numerose passeggiate nei luoghi emblematici.
