Sin dal X secolo, la foresta del Parc naturel régional du Gâtinais è stata studiata da noti naturalisti (Linné, Jussieu e Buffon) sin dal XVII secolo e anche i pittori sono stati attratti dalla foresta (ad es. Millet, Rousseau, Corot), e hanno creato la scuola di Barbizon nel XIX secolo. A causa della sua prossimità alla capitale, l'area riceve un numero eccezionalmente elevato di visitatori, che rappresenta una grande preoccupazione per la gestione.
