Le Isole di Lerino formano un piccolo arcipelago composto da due piccole isole e da alcuni isolotti. Esse sono poste vicino alla costa di Cannes, Costa Azzurra e le due isole principali sono l'isola di Santa Margherita e l'isola di Sant'Onorato.
Nel 410 venne fondato il monastero di Lerino, ad opera di sant'Onorato di Arles sull'isola che poi fu battezzata col suo nome. Nell'Alto Medioevo il cenobio, dove san Patrizio, l'evangelizzatore dell'Irlanda, avrebbe compiuto i suoi primi studi, fu frequentato da pellegrini irlandesi e scozzesi. Vi si formò anche sant'Attala, in seguito abate dell'abbazia di San Colombano nel VII secolo. Nel 732 l'abate e cinquecento monaci, attaccati dai Saraceni, furono uccisi. Nel 1073 il monastero fu fortificato ad opera dell'abate Aldebert.
