La Fère, soprannominata "la città dell'artigliere", è una delle città più antiche del Nord-Est
Già nel 1720 vi fu istituita la prima Scuola Reale di Artiglieria, che ospitava un reggimento di 4.000 uomini. Fino al 1993, il 41° reggimento di artiglieria marina era basato nella città. In memoria della sua eroica resistenza durante le guerre, Parigi le offrì, nel 1974, la statua dell'artigliere del Pont de l'Alma, che oggi si trova al centro dell'attuale Place d'Armes, di fronte alla caserma, classificata come monumento storico.
