La testa decapitata di San Giovanni Battista gioca un ruolo importante nel suo martirio. Secondo la tradizione, Giovanni Battista fu imprigionato e decapitato per ordine del re Erode Antipa, dopo che Salomè, la figlia di Erodiade, su richiesta della madre, chiese la testa su un piatto come ricompensa per la sua danza. La testa fu data a Salomè, che la consegnò alla madre. I discepoli di Giovanni in seguito recuperarono il corpo e lo seppellirono. Questa testa simboleggia il martirio ed è commemorata annualmente il 29 agosto sia nelle tradizioni cattolica che ortodossa.
