La penisola istriana è la più grande penisola del Mare Adriatico. La penisola si trova a nord del Mare Adriatico, tra il Golfo di Trieste e il Quarnaro. La penisola è condivisa da Croazia, Slovenia e Italia. La parte più grande appartiene alla Croazia, principalmente alla Contea di Istria (croato: Istarska županija, italiano: Regione istriana) e in misura minore alla Contea di Primorje-Gorski Kotar (croato: Primorsko-goranska županija). Una piccola parte a nord dell'Istria appartiene alla regione slovena della Primorska. Qui ci sono le città costiere e portuali di Izola (Isola), Piran (Pirano), Portorož (Portorosa), Ankaran (Ancarano) e Capodistria (Capodistria), di cui Capodistria è l'unico porto commerciale. Il comune di Muggia (sloveno: Milje) forma la parte italiana dell'Istria. L'Istria attrae tradizionalmente molti turisti. Persone famose come Dante, Jules Verne, James Joyce e Robert Koch hanno visitato la zona.
